The Norwegian Ridgeback is a dragon from Norway. Rubeus Hagrid is given a egg of this species which hatches into Norberta, but he has to send her to a dragon sanctuary in Romania. It appears in Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone and Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.

About[]

The Norwegian Ridgeback is nearly identical to the Hungarian Horntail in appearance, except for the fact that it has prominent jet-black ridges down its back instead of spikes. Ridgeback eggs are black[2] and by the age of 1-3 months, they develop flame-breathing skills which is earlier than any other kind of dragon.[1]

The new-born Ridgebacks look like a "crumpled, black umbrella"; with large spiny wings, a skinny body, a long snout, large nostrils, stubs of horns, pointed fangs and bulging, orange eyes. They grow 3 times their length in just 7 days. They have poisonous fangs and if they bite somone, the wound will swell up twice its size and go green if untreated.[2]

It is one of the rarest species of dragon because they fight and kill their own kind. They eat large land mammals but they have been known to carry a whole whale calf.[1]
