The Porlock is a wizarding beast in Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. They are a creature with shaggy fur that lives to guard horses.[1]

About[]

The Porlock is a creature with a body of shaggy fur with a large quantity of rough hair on its head. They have a very large nose, small arms with four stubby fingers on the end and two cloven feet. They reach a height of only around two feet high. They feed on grass and are horse-guardians, hence why they live in stables where they curl up in the straw or they shelter in the midst of the herd they are protecting. A very shy creature, they do not trust humans and hide if they are approaching.[1]

History[]

In the twelfth century, the Wizards' Council first tried to classify non-wizard creatures into a beast or being to integrate them into the process of creating and upholding wizarding laws. Burdock Muldoon considered a being to be a creature that walks on two legs. Porlocks reached the criteria and attended a gathering for discussion. However, they weren't capable of being involved and Burdock slipped on a pile of Porlock dung when he tried to open proceedings, causing him to run out of the chamber while cursing. Under the definition later set by Grogan Stump, Porlocks are considered beasts for their inability to understand and shape wizarding laws due to their lack of intelligence.[2]
