They can grant fame, luck, good fortune, the feeling of love, change appearances or cause pain or harm.
Certain potions are applied instead of drunk, particularly for healing. They can have an effect on those who are simply in the same room with it. Being a science, potion-making has rules including a step-by-step recipe that has to be copied in order for the potion to be successful. The length of time a potion takes to brew varies depending on each potion, which require great patience and planning ahead.[1] Certain potions have to be completed at specific times of the year. It is very important to have a wand in order to add a magical element to the potion. The wand has to be used properly.[1]
A witch or wizard who is adept at potion-making and have a career in the art is called a potioneer. The subject of Potions is taught at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. It is taken in the first year until at least the fifth year. It is an option for N.E.W.T. study if the student achieves a high enough grade in their O.W.L.s.[2]
There are potent potions that can be used to easily get rid of a Chizpurfle infestation. The creatures can also feed on certain potions and will try to live in cauldrons to catch drops.[3]
