Riddikulus is an incantation to a charm which is used to repel a Boggart. It will change a fear into a less-threatening and hopefully comical form. The laughter will eventually banish it.
About[]
When facing a Boggart, the performer has to acknowledge what they fear and envision what they want to change it into using clear concentration. It has a whip-cracking sound whenever it is used.[1]
History[]
In September 1993, Professor Lupin used a third-year Defence Against the Dark Arts lesson to teach about Boggarts. He told students to use the Riddikulus spell when facing a Boggart he found in the staff-room at Hogwarts School. The transformed fears included[1]:
Person | Fear | Riddikulus |
---|---|---|
Neville Longbottom | Severus Snape | Snape in the clothes of Augusta Longbottom[1] |
Parvati Patil | Blood-stained and bandaged mummy | Bandages unravelling causing it to get entangled and trip[1] |
Seamus Finnigan | Banshee | Causing her to lose her voice[1] |
Dean Thomas | Severed hand | Hand getting caught in a trap[1] |
Ronald Weasley | Spider | Vanished the spider's legs, causing it to fall and roll[1] |
Remus Lupin | Full moon (because he was a werewolf) | Turning it into a cockroach[1] |
