The second year is a year of education at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry for students aged twelve to thirteen. They continue to study the seven subjects they started in their first year for which they take examinations in June.
Harry Potter's second year takes place in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.

In the summer before their second year, every student is sent a letter with new books they have to purchase and bring to school that year.[1] In April, every second year is given a list of new subjects they start in their third year. They have to choose at least two.[2]

Gilderoy Lockhart's tenure[]
During the second-year of Harry Potter's education, Defence Against the Dark Arts is taught by Gilderoy Lockhart. He is incompetent at performing magic, while his teaching is subpar. In his arrogance, he likes to teach the students stories about his life which are later proven fraudulent. Due to his teaching, it's unknown what an average, second year education in the subject is supposed to be like.
He has written seven books which he asks every student regardless of their year to bring. He asks for answers for things like what his favourite colour is or his personal hopes for the future. He eventually has students acting out scenes in his books. It is not rooted in fact about defence or Dark creatures. These books were:
