Sir Cadogan is a character in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. He is a wizard and Knight whose portrait hangs in a seventh-floor corridor of Hogwarts Castle. He is known for behaving overly brave and daring, challenging students and searching for glory.

Biography[]

Cadogan's painting is hung in the seventh-floor Divination corridor. It is at the top of the stairs leading up to the landing. The portrait's background is a bare stretch of grass and he has a fat, gray pony.[1]

In September 1993, Harry Potter noticed Cadogan's empty painting before he appeared chasing a pony because he had fallen off it. He yelled when he saw Harry, Ron and Hermione looking in and asked them why they were trespassing, brandishing a sword and hopping up and down in a rage before losing balance and falling again. Harry asked him if he was okay, but Cadogan told him to "get back [...] you rogue".[1]

Cadogan began brandishing a sword again before getting it stuck in the grass. Harry finally asked him if he knew the way to the North Tower because he, Ron and Hermione were heading to their first Divination lesson. Cadogan stopped worrying about fighting, and was delighted to be asked to join such a mission. He got back on the pony, and guided the three to the tower. He galloped through paintings in the corridor until he got to foot of the tower's stairs, before saying farewell.[1]

Cadogan was installed by Professor Dumbledore to guard Gryffindor Tower when the Fat Lady was attacked by Sirius Black. Cadogan was brave enough to volunteer. He was unpopular because he challenged students to duels and changed complicated passwords twice a day. In November, he saw Harry leaving the common room and demanded he fight, but he told Cadogan to shut up.[2]

In February, Neville Longbottom asked for and wrote down every password Cadogan was going to use for a week because he kept changing it. He soon lost the paper and Cadogan wouldn't let him in, calling Neville a "loon" who was trying to get in. He told Harry and Ron to put Neville in irons but Ron told Cadogan to shut up. Harry gave Cadogan the correct password and he had to let Neville in.[3]

Cadogan later let Sirius Black into the common room when he gave a password he found wrote down by Neville. He was looking for Scabbers and was found by Ron brandishing a knife. Professor McGonagall thought Ron was joking at first, until she asked Cadogan if he had let anyone in. He proudly told her about Black and how he had a list of passwords.[4] Because he had failed to try and stop Black, he was sacked and put back in the seventh-floor.[5]
