The spider is an eight-legged and eight-eyed arachnid of which there are various species. An Acromantula was a magical species of spider.

Found throughout the wizarding and Muggle world, there were common, harmless spiders and poisonous, dangerous spiders. The Acromantula was the largest spider and it was bred in the wizarding world. Every spider had a fear of a Basilisk and would leave a building if it sensed a Basilisk.
History[]
Ronald Weasley had a fear of spiders (arachnophobia) since the age of three, when Fred Weasley turned a teddy bear into a spider. He even had a Boggart that would turn into a spider.[1]
In 1992 to 1993, spiders in Hogwarts School run away into the Forbidden Forest in fear when a Basilisk was unleashed.[1] Harry, Ron and Hermione noticed their strange behaviour and Hermione later used it to deduce it was a Basilisk.[2] In April, Rubeus Hagrid told Harry and Ron if they want to find out things about the Chamber of Secrets then they should follow the spiders.[3] The spiders led them to an Acromantula colony led by Aragog.[4]
In September 1993, Ron faced a Boggart which transformed into a spider and used Riddikulus to render it legless.[5] Towards the end of September, Crookshanks found a spider and ate it.[6]
