Talons and Tea Leaves is the sixth chapter of Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban.
Events[]
Harry Potter is teased by Slytherins the morning of the first day of term at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. He is talking to Ron, Hermione, Fred and George when they receive their new timetables. Ron is surprised that Hermione's schedule includes classes that take place at the same time. Rubeus Hagrid tells them he spent the morning preparing for his first lesson teaching Care of Magical Creatures.
Their first lesson of the day is Divination. The classroom is at the top of the castle but they can't find it. Sir Cadogan appears to give help very enthustically and leads them to the a ceiling door which they have to climb up. The teacher is Sybill Trelawney who teaches them to read tea leaves. She also tells Lavender Brown that the thing she is dreading will happen on 16 October. Harry and Ron read each others tea leaves. Harry says Ron will suffer trials and suffering but he will be happy about it. Ron isn't very good at reading his so Professor Trelawney helps. She thinks Harry's tea leaves have the shape of the Grim which means he is going to die.
In their Transfiguration class, Professor McGonagall tells everyone that Trelawney predicts a student's death every year before indicating that she is a fraud. At lunch, Harry tells Ron and Hermione that he saw a Grim the night he ran away from the Dursleys in August. Hermione talks very negatively about Divination, telling them how much better Arithmancy is. Ron is confused because she couldn't have attended an Arithmancy class yet while she storms off.
After lunch, they attend their Care of Magical Creatures lesson on the edge of the Forbidden Forest. Hagrid takes everyone to a Hippogriff paddock where he shows everyone how to open The Monster Book of Monsters. Draco Malfoy starts mocking Hagrid causing Harry to tell him to shut up. Draco teases Harry for fainting after he was attacked by a Dementor. Hagrid teaches everyone the right way to approach a Hippogriff with Harry volunteering to try it first. Buckbeak accepts Harry and lets him ride on him while he flies around the paddock. Draco then decides to approach Buckbeak in a rude way which causes the Hippogriff to attack him. Hagrid takes Draco to Poppy Pomfrey.
At dinner, Hagrid doesn't appear so Harry, Ron and Hermione head down to his Hut to talk to him. Draco is faking his injuries, the Board of Governors think Hagrid taught the third-years something too advanced and he is drinking heavily to cope. They get Hagrid to sober up when he realises Harry is wandering the school grounds at night when Sirius Black is still loose. He takes them back to the castle for their safety.
