The Chamber of Secrets is the sixteenth chapter of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.
Events[]
Professor McGonagall announces the Mandrake Restorative Draught will be ready that evening. Ginny looks very pale and is about to tell Harry and Ron something important when she is interrupted. Harry and Ron want to speak to Myrtle about how she died but they cannot find a way to sneak off because teachers have to supervise students.
Eventually, Harry and Ron manage to manipulate Professor Lockhart into letting them go through a corridor on their own. They sneak off but Professor McGonagall finds them and looks furious. Harry lies about where he was going by telling her he misses Hermione and wants to speak to her and tell her she will be okay. McGonagall gives them special permission to go in the Hospital Wing.
Harry finds a piece of paper in Hermione's frozen hand and reads her research about the monster. She has figured out the creature in the Chamber of Secrets is a Basilisk which is why spiders flee in fear, roosters are being killed because their cry is fatal to a Basilisk, that Harry is able to hear and understand it because it is speaking Parseltongue and nobody has been killed by it's gaze because they didn't look directly into it's eyes.
They head to the staff-room to tell the teachers but hear them talking about a new development. Ginny has been taken into the Chamber of Secrets with a warning "HER SKELETON WILL LIE IN THE CHAMBER FOREVER" written on a wall. The teachers get Professor Lockhart out the way by "giving" him the job of saving her because he told them he knew where the entrance was. Harry and Ron decide to go to Lockhart to help. However, they find him about to do a runner. He admits that he is a fraud who hasn't done anything he claims to have in his books. They force Lockhart to go anyway and talk to Myrtle who might know where the entrance is. She tells them she died near a tap and points to the one she is talking about.
Harry speaks Parseltongue to the tap and it opens a large pipe that leads underground. The three go through it until they eventually find large, shedded Basilisk skin. Lockhart panicks and wants to run away. He takes Ron's broken wand and attempts to erase their memories with the Memory Charm but the malfunctioning wand bounces the spell back and erases Lockhart's memory instead. The force causes rocks to fall and Harry is cut off from the others. He has continue moving forward on his own. He eventually reaches a wall which he speaks to in Parseltongue again and it opens up into the Chamber of Secrets.
