The Dementor is the fifth chapter of Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban.
Events[]
Harry Potter is woken up by Tom with a cup of tea when Ronald Weasley barges into the room to rant about his brother. Harry tried to tell Ron that the previous evening, he had overheard Arthur Weasley talking about Sirius Black wanting to kill him. However, he is interrupted throughout the morning. Harry does not get a chance to talk about it at breakfast or when they leave the Leaky Cauldron taking Ministry cars to King's Cross Station.
When he is boarding the Hogwarts Express, he is called to the side by Arthur. He tells Arthur that he overheard the truth about Black. Harry questions why he would go looking for someone who wants to kill him. Arthur asks Harry to promise that he won't go looking for Black but he couldn't reply because the train takes off. They search for an empty compartment but only find one that isn't full. Inside is a sleeping Professor called Remus Lupin. Harry finally tells his friends about Black to their shock.
While they talk, a Sneakoscope starts whistling in the luggage which signifies it has detected someone nearby being untrusthworthy. They couldn't figure out why so they thought it was broken. When they start talking about Hogsmeade, Harry reveals he can't visit it because he didn't get his permission slip signed. Hermione lets Crookshanks out of his cage. He pounces at Scabbers who hops into Ron's pocket.
After lunch, they are interrupted by Draco Malfoy, Vincent Crabbe and Gregory Goyle. When they start to tease Ron, they notice Lupin sleeping. Upon hearing he is a new teacher, they decide to leave. The rain outside is getting heavier while the hours slip by until the train suddenly halts to a stop. The lamps go out which leaves the train in darkness. Neville Longbottom falls into their compartment, followed shortly by Ginny Weasley.
The commotion wakes up Lupin who tries to walk out to speak to the driver. However, the door suddenly opens. Standing in front of everyone is a Dementor which attacks Harry until he collapses. He hears a woman screaming while he falls unconscious. Lupin saves him with the Patronus Charm. Harry wakes up later to find the train has restarted. The cloaked figure is gone but he discovers nobody else could hear the screaming. Lupin gives him a piece of chocolate which should help with his recovery, then leaves to talk to the driver.
When they arrive at Hogwarts Castle, Draco started teasing Harry for fainting but shuts up when Lupin shows up. He is checked out by Poppy Pomfrey with a concerned Minerva McGonagall. At the feast in the Great Hall, it is announced that Lupin will be the new Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher while Rubeus Hagrid is teaching Care of Magical Creatures.
