The Midnight Duel was the ninth chapter of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone.
Events[]
Harry, Ron and Hermione find out they have Flying beginning with the Slytherins and the entire year become very confident or very nervous. Harry immediately finds he had proficent skill at flying, and the broom jumped up right away when he demanded it. They then mounted the broom and had to lift off the ground to a short height, but Neville had no control and went Flying away unintentionally very high before falling to the ground.
Neville had a broken wrist and Rolanda Hooch had to take him the Hospital Wing, telling everyone not to fly without her supervision. However, Draco found Neville's gift from home which he dropped on the floor, and flies off with it. Harry goes to get it back and Draco throws it. Harry shocks everyone by catching it and he was noticed by an impressed Minerva McGonagall. He originally worried she was going to punish him, but she took him to meet Oliver Wood and announced he would be the new Seeker in the Gryffindor Quidditch team.
Harry finds out he will be the youngest seeker in nearly a century. Draco was shocked because he expected Harry would be expelled and he challenges Harry to a duel. Ron agrees to be Harry's second and they agree to meet Draco at midnight in the trophy room. They sneak out at midnight, joined by Hermione who attempted to prevent them and Neville who ended up being trapped outside the common room with Hermione.
They make it to the trophy room and find they were set up by Draco. Filch and Mrs Norris were waiting for them. They run away and without meaning to be, ended up on the out of bounds third floor corridor and went in a room where they were confronted by Fluffy. They notice the trapdoor it was guarding, but run away and eventually make it back to the common room, where an angry Hermione tells them off. Harry was actually amazed and wondered what the three-headed dog was guarding.
