Harry Potter Books Wiki

The Monster Book of Monsters is a book about creatures in the wizarding world. It appears in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban.

About[]

The book has a green cover and its title is written in emblazoned gold. It is sentient and will move, flip and shuffle around sideways of its own accord. It hides in dark spaces and snaps itself shut like it has jaws. To subdue it, the book has to he flattened and secured by putting a belt round it which causes it to shudder in anger.[1] It will be tamed if its spine is stroked which will make it shiver and open up.[2] It is sold in Flourish and Blotts.[3]

History[]

Rubeus Hagrid chose the book for third years studying Care of Magical Creatures. He sent Harry Potter a copy but he had to use a belt to keep its jaws shut because he knew Vernon and Petunia Dursley didn't want to find it in their house. He put it under the floorboards of his bedroom to hide it. Hagrid didn't tell Harry why he needed the book.[1]

Flourish and Blotts had to keep hundreds of copies of the book in an iron cage. The books kept snapping, fighting each other and flying everywhere in their cage causing havoc. The staff had to wear thick, black gloves and wield a walking stick to capture a book in the cage. The manager told Harry he wasn't going to stock these books in the future and was close to tears when another two students asked for a copy.[3]

Fellow students in Harry's year kept their books shut by using ropes, belts, bullclips and tight bags.[2]
