The Writing on the Wall is the ninth chapter of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.
Events[]
Filch gets to the corridor where Mrs Norris is Petrified and he holds Harry responsible. Professor Dumbledore calms Filch down and takes Harry, Ron, Hermione, Filch, Professors Lockhart, Snape, and McGonagall to an office. Dumbledore tells Filch that Harry isn't responsible because Petrification takes a powerful Dark spell beyond the skill of a second-year to do.
Snape finds Harry's version of events strange, questioning why he is in that corridor at that time when logically he should be heading towards the Great Hall. He finds Harry is holding back and being untruthful. Harry didn't tell the teachers about the voice he heard in the walls that led him to the corridor. Having agreed a Mandrake Restorative Draught wik eventually bring Mrs Norris back, Dumbledore let Harry, Ron and Hermione go.
The three friends agree hearing voices even in the wizarding world is a bad sign and Harry shouldn't tell anyone. For a few days, the whole school talks about what happened to Mrs Norris and who the Heir of Slytherin is. Justin Finch-Fletchley and a few students decide Harry is the Heir of Slytherin and start avoiding him. Hermione is researching the Chamber of Secrets and eventually asks Professor Binns about it. Professor Binns tells everybody about the legend. The four founders had an argument because Salazar Slytherin wants to exclude Muggle-borns from Hogwarts . He eventually abandoned the school but he built the Chamber of Secrets before leaving in the hope an Heir would one day unleash a creature inside and purge the school of Muggle-borns. He concludes it doesn't actually exist.
Harry, Ron and Hermione go back to the writing on the wall and notice lots of spider fleeing the school through a nearby window. Knowing Myrtle haunts a room near the warning, they ask her if she noticed anything strange that evening. She hasn't because she is too upset. Percy arrives and shouts at Harry, Ron and Hermione for going back to the warning. The three later decide Draco has to be the Heir of Slytherin.
