The Thunderbird is a wizarding avian beast with the ability to make storms and sense danger. They first appear in Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.

About[]

Thunderbirds reside mainly in the state of Arizona in the United States of America. They are an elegant, large avian bird that grow taller than humans. They have the power to create storms while they fly and they possess a heightened sense of superatural danger.[1] Thunderbirds have been known to cause wands to unleash curses earlier than a witch or wizard intends in the presence of danger.[1][2]

History[]

One of the four houses for Ilvermorny School of Witchcraft and Wizardry was named after the Thunderbird.[1]

In 1927, Seraphina Picquery (President of the Magical Congress of the United States of America) made the Thunderbird the first protected species. She eventually extended her order to include every North American animal. She also requested that Newton Scamander keep American creatures out of his book, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. He obliged but later added such creatures, including the Thunderbird, when he republished with a new edition in 2017.[2]
