About[]
A toad is a non-magical animal which has various uses in the wizarding world. They are often used in potions[1] and to test spells on.[2] If a chicken egg is hatched under a toad, it will produce a Basilisk.[3]
History[]
Having a toad used to be a very popular choice of pet. However, by 1991, Rubeus Hagrid told Harry Potter that owning a toad went out of fashion years ago. Even though it wasn't cool to bring a toad to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, students had the choice to do so. [4] Neville Longbottom had a toad called Trevor.[5] During their first year, Professor Flitwick tested the spell Levitation Charm on Trevor during a Charms lesson.[2]
In August 1993, the Magical Menagerie had purple toads for sale which were fed dead blowflies.[6]
