A vampire is a Dark being known for drinking people's blood by biting their neck.
About[]
Vampires were given the classification of "being" by the Ministry of Magic. Centaurs objected because they did not want to be categorised with Dark creatures.[2]
History[]
In August 1991, Quirinus Quirrell wanted to buy a book about vampires in Diagon Alley. Harry Potter asked Rubeus Hagrid if Quirrell always looked nervous. Hagrid replied that people say when Quirrell took a year off studying to get real experience, he encountered vampires in the Black Forest. Ever since he returned, he had acted nervous.[3]
Quirrell's classroom at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry stunk of garlic. Everyone thought it was to ward off a vampire he had encountered in Romania.[4] It's unknown whether he did encounter vampires, or if it was a cover story for finding Voldemort in Albania.
In or before 1992, Gilderoy Lockhart wrote a book called Voyages with Vampires. He alleged he after he had dealt with a particular vampire, he could only eat lettuce.[5] Lockhart was eventually revealed to be a fraud who stole stories from other people. It's possible it was not Lockhart who experienced this.[6]
In 1994, third-year students at Hogwarts were taught about vampires. Professor Lupin asked for an essay about vampires for homework. Neville Longbottom tried to get Harry to help him write it. Neville was confused about whether vampires have to eat garlic for it to have an affect on them.[7]
In an article for the Daily Prophet, Rita Skeeter suggested that the British Ministry of Magic was wasting their time discussing cauldron thickness when they should have been focusing on getting rid of vampires. However, vampires are protected under paragraph twelve of the Guidelines for the Treatment of Non-Wizard Part-Humans.[8]
