Veela are magical beings which takes the appearances of beautiful, young women. They appear in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.
About[]
A veela takes the form of an incredibly beautiful woman with white-gold hair and moon-bright skin. Even if there is no wind, their hair will sweep behind them in the air. When provoked, their appearance will start to change. Their faces elongonate and they develop sharp, cruel-beaked bird heads with long, scaly wings growing from their shoulders.[1]
Veela have their own magic and the ability to mesmerise men by using a seductive dance to put them into a trance. Those who fall under their spell experience a blissfully blank mind and feel that the veela and their dance is the only thing that matters in the world. They start to feel compelled into impressing the veela with grandiose claims or actions with no regard for their own health and safety. If they were to stop fawning over the veela, they feel something terrible would happen. The effects briefly linger on when the veela do stop. The only ways for someone to block out their allure is by putting fingers in their ears, or receiving a slap or kick to snap them out of the trance.[1]
History[]
At the 422nd Quidditch World Cup, a hundred veela glided onto the pitch during the pre-game display of the Bulgarian National Quidditch team. When they started dancing, the crowd fell into a daze. They danced faster and faster until the music stopped. Those in a trance experienced half-formed thoughts chasing through their mind, encouraging them to something grandiose. Harry Potter and Ronald Weasley felt like jumping from the Top Box. When the music had stopped, the crowd were angry because they did not want the veela to leave. While the effect lingered, the supported of Ireland did not understand why they weren't supporting Bulgaria instead. The veela were sulking when Bulgaria were losing.[1]
The veela danced in celebration when Bulgaria scored their first goal. The veela grew angrier over the course of the game when Ireland took a big lead over Bulgaria. The leprechauns representing Ireland taunted the Bulgarians and reacted with discontent when Irish players were fouled. They danced in anger when the leprechauns laughed at the Bulgarians which drew the attention of the referee who got lost into a trance. He had to be kicked in the shins to snap out of it, after which he tried to order the veela to leave the arena.[1]
When the Bulgarians committed another foul on the Irish, the leprechauns gave the veela a rude sign. The veela lost control and started throwing balls of fire at the leprechauns. They started to show their true, ugly bird-like nature while Ministry officials tried to intervene with their fight. The officials were firing their wands at the shrieking veela when Ireland scored another goal. After the victory of Ireland, mediwizards had to push their way through the veela and leprechauns to reach an injured Viktor Krum. [1]
After the final, the campsites were attacked by Death Eaters. The veela staying there ran into the forest where they were encountered by Stan Shunpike and his friends. They fell under the veelas' spell and were entranced into making bold claims to impress them. One lied that he was a dragon killer, another that he was a prolific vampire hunter, and Stan told them he would be the youngest ever Minister for Magic. Ron was walking by and chimed in that he had invented a broomstick that could reach Jupiter and was dragged away by Harry and Hermione Granger.[2]
